James Klotter Chapter
Recognizes excellence in both students & faculty
1. Anthony P. Curtis Scholar Award
The Anthony P. Curtis Scholar Award is the highest conferrable student award of James Klotter Chapter. It is conferred whenever the chapter sees fit in recognition of a Rho Kappa or History Club member (active or alumni) who has shown exemplary scholarly potential, dedication to Rho Kappa and historical studies, outstanding knowledge of the social sciences and humanities, and a productive disposition toward learning. It is presented by the Allen C. Guelzo Chair of History, except in the instance of him/her being the recipient, in which case it is presented by the President. The award is named in honor of Tony Curtis, a Boyd County native and Assistant Editor of the Kentucky Historical Society's Civil War Governors of Kentucky Digital Documentary Edition.
2. Honorary Membership
Honorary Membership may be bestowed on any individual throughout the course of the year who displays admirable qualities, knowledge, integrity, etc. yet does not meet the requirements for standard induction.
3. The Thomas D. Clark Teaching Award
Named for Thomas D. Clark, Kentucky's late Historian Laureate and the "Dean of Historians," the Clark Teaching Award is bestowed on one faculty member annually by the Teacher Center in recognition of his/her extraordinary dedication to students, teaching, and the social sciences and humanities. Eligible teachers must be part of the Social Studies, English, Fine Arts, and/or World Languages Departments. Clark Teaching Laureates are selected by a vote among JKC members, and the award is presented by the Allen C. Guelzo Chair of History.
4. David Herbert Donald Distinguished Service Award
Named for David Herbert Donald, the late Lincoln scholar and educator, the Donald Service Award is bestowed on one faculty member, educator, and/or community member by the Teacher Center in recognition of his/her service to BCHS, students, education, and/or the social sciences & humanities. It is awarded by a vote among JKC members whenever they see fit -- it is generally conferred infrequently. Donald Service Laureates are presented with the award by the Allen C. Guelzo Chair of History. Teachers selected for the DHDDSA are generally preparing to retire.
5. Alumni Hall of Honor Induction
The James Klotter Chapter Alumni Hall of Honor recognizes outstanding JKC members who graduated in good standing with the Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society. Alumni are selected for the Hall of Honor on a rolling, year-round basis. In order to qualify, alumni must have made a significant contribution to Rho Kappa, academia, society, humanity, or have done something else of great note. Though some alumni will be selected without solicitation, the Alumni Welcome Center encourages nominations. Selection is based on extensive review of the contributions & character of alumni, and will proceed to a vote if a recommendation of the alumnus/alumna is made by Legacy Chair to a selection committee.
